Bright news for dark fiber

A Platinum Club value reader writes in to call my attention to an EU Competition Commission ruling of last week, which found that a municipal dark fiber project in Limousin, France, does not constitute state aid.

"The Commission has taken into account the fact that Limousin consists mainly of rural and remote areas, and that access to broadband services offered by existing market operators in Limousin is insufficient to meet the population's essential needs."

It's interesting to ponder the effects of this on a wider scale in future - frustrated urbanites trudging along with their overbooked 20Mbps ADSL 2+ connections while the more fortunate in the hinterlands get 100Mbps symmetrical service over fiber to the cottage!
